The Greatest Generation: A Legacy of Service and Courage

From the Trenches to the Home Front

The Greatest Generation, a term coined by Tom Brokaw in his 1998 book, refers to the generation of Americans born between 1901 and 1927 who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. These individuals made up the bulk of those serving in the war and played a pivotal role in shaping the course of American history.

Modern-Day Centenarians

Today, most surviving members of the Greatest Generation are over 100 years old, known as centenarians. According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 750,000-900,000 centenarians living in the United States.

Defining Moments

A recent Pew Research Center survey, conducted in partnership with AE Networks HISTORY, asked Americans from different generations to list the events that have shaped their lives. For members of the Greatest Generation, World War II emerged as the single most influential event.

A Legacy that Endures

The Greatest Generation is not the only generation that scholars have identified, but it holds a unique place in American history. As the generation that fought and sacrificed to defend their country, they embody the values of patriotism, resilience, and determination.
